Callirhoë involucrata

Wine-cups (Callirhoë involucrata) kah-LEER-oh-ee in-vol-yew-KRAY-tah Genus:  Callirhoë

This plant resembles a rosy-purple poppy mallow that blooms all summer. The saucer-shaped flowers are held above prostrate red stems and fingered leaves.

Noteworthy Characteristics: 

Wine-cups can spread 5 feet or more within two years but doesn't become invasive. A mature plant will spread 5 feet or more, studded with up-facing glowing purple flowers.

Care: 

Plant in full sun and sandy, well-drained soil. Does not like winter moisture.

Propagation: 

Seeds are produced in pods which can be direct sown or sown in a container. Mature plants resent moving as it disturbs the sensitive tap root.

Problems: 

Sometimes affected by rust diseases, powdery mildew, aphids, and spider mites.
