This low-care, evergreen shrub to 10-15 feet tall and wide produces large, bright red bottlebrush flowers from spring through summer followed by woody seedpods. It is attractive to hummingbirds. Young shoots are pinkish red.
Care:Provide full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil in USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11). Very adaptable. Bottlebrushes respond well to hard pruning.
Propagation:Sow seed in spring, root cuttings in summer.
Problems:Sawfly larvae are the worst pests for this species. Physical removal is the most effective method of control. Scale insects may also be problematic.
