Indian shot (Canna 'Centenaire de Rozain-Bourcharlat') KAN-ah Genus:  Canna This 3-foot-tall canna from the 1920s has impossibly deep, pure-rose flowers recalling orchids and leis. It's an old French variety. Noteworthy Characteristics:  Medium height, bronze foliage, large true pink flowers. Care:  In a greenhouse, cannas need full light with shade from hot sun, and a soilless potting mix. Water freely and fertilize monthly with a phosphate-rich liquid feed. In the garden, grow in fertile soil in full sun, water freely in dry weather, and deadhead regularly. Where not hardy, plant out in early summer and lift the rhizomes after autumn frost, storing in barely moist leaf mold or peat in a frost-free location. Propagation:  After chipping the seeds or soaking them in warm water for 24 hours, sow them at 70°F in spring or autumn. Problems:  Slugs, snails, spider mites, and caterpillars may be problems, and bean yellow mosaic and tomato spotted wilt viruses can occur. Rust, fungal leaf spot, and bacterial blight are common.
