(Dahlia 'Bashful')
DAL-ee-ah
Genus:
Dahlia
'Bashful' is a reliable and prolific bloomer. The blooms (purplish petals surrounding a golden center) have a velvety feel that draws bees and butterflies. As dahlias go, 'Bashful' is not a tall plant, so it's best to place it near the front of a bed.
-Alastair Gunn, Dahlias that deliver, Fine Gardening issue #121
Noteworthy Characteristics:
Deep pink petals that fade to pale pink at the tips surround showy yellow stamens.
Care:
Provide full sun, except in the South, where some shade is preferred, and well-drained soil. Pinching off the first flower bud promotes a bushier plant. Deadhead regularly.
Propagation:
Division in spring is preferred. Use a sharp knife to sever tubers ensuring that each division has at least one eye.
Problems:
Slugs, snails, rabbits, earwigs, aphids.
