Southern bush honeysuckle has an attractive thicket-forming habit. Glossy green leaves with tapered tips emerge tinged with bronze and mature to mid-green on reddish stems. Sulfur-yellow flowers in terminal clusters to 3 inches across appear in summer.

Noteworthy Characteristics: 

Spreads by suckers. Native to the southeastern U.S. Useful in masses, in the shrub border, or open woodland garden.

Care: 

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Tolerates poor conditions. Cut back in late winter for best flower production.

Propagation: 

From suckers in early and mid-spring. Root softwood cuttings in summer.

Problems: 

Powdery mildew and fungal spot.
