Golden barrel cactus has a rounded form that eventually elongates. Bright green stems bear 20 to 40 sharply angled ribs. Yellow areoles produce golden yellow spines. Bright yellow flowers appear in summer.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
Found in the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Combines well with blue succulents.
Care:
Where not hardy, grow in a warm greenhouse. Hardy to 20°F.
Propagation:
Sow seed in spring.
Problems:
Basal stem rot, soft rot, and mealybugs are common on small plants.
