Foxtail lily (Eremurus robustus)
Genus:
Eremurus
This species produces very tall spires of pale pink flowers with yellow stamens atop leafless stems that puncture vertical space with unmatched elegance.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
Eremurus provide a powerful atmosphere of enchantment and beauty in a sunny border. Their individual florets open from the base and continue upward, exposing conspicuous stamens along a beautiful column. The effect is particularly dramatic when lit from behind.
Care:
Grow in fertile, sandy soil in full sun, and protect from strong winds. Plant crowns 4-6 inches deep and carefully spread the roots over a mound of soil. Mulch plants when young.
Propagation:
Start seed in a cold frame in fall or start indoors at 59°F in late winter. Alternatively, plants can be divided after flowering, but care must be taken with the brittle roots.
Problems:
Slugs.
