Fritillaria meleagris

Checkered lily (Fritillaria meleagris) frit-ill-AIR-ee-ah mel-ee-AG-riss Genus:  Fritillaria Solitary or paired bell-shaped flowers in shades of checkered maroon and reddish-purple or white dangle from delicate, arching stems in spring. Noteworthy Characteristics:  This species is suitable for growing in a damp meadow or open woodland, and is great for naturalizing in lawn. Care:  Fritillaria meleagris prefers moist soil in full sun to light shade, and cool, damp summers. Propagation:  Sow seed in a cold frame in fall, provide winter cold treatment, and then move to a cool greenhouse; divide offsets in late summer. Problems:  Rust, leaf spot.
