This is an upright evergreen shrub with lance-shaped leaves. Foliage emerges bright red or bronze, turning a leathery dark green. Small white flowers appear in mid- to late spring.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
Excellent as a hedge, in a shrub border, or in mixed plantings. A cross of
P. glabra and
P. serratifolia .
Care:
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Shoot hardy through Zone 6. At the edge of its range, grow near a wall or sheltered by trees to provide some protection.
Propagation:
Root semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Problems:
Crown gall, mushroom root rot, gray mold (Botrytis), leaf scorch, and Entomosporium leaf spot.
