While there are over 250,000 species of flowering plants (angiosperms that produce flowers, fruits and seeds), there are some that are more popular than others. Providing a good bloom for cut flowers can be tricky in a garden. These garden flowers all have nice blooming flowers for a colorful and pleasing landscape.

Stokes Aster

Stokes aster, or Stokesia laevis, is from the Asteraceae/Compositae, or aster/daisy family. It is a perennial evergreen plant good for beginners. Stokes aster will get 1 to 2 feet tall and flower colors are blue, white, pink or lavender. Plant Stokesia laevis in full sun in well-drained soil. Propagate by dividing root clumps.

Calla Lily

Calla lily, or Zantedeschia aethiopica, is from the Araceae, or Alum, family. It is a perennial flower. Calla lilies get nearly 2 feet tall and have oval leaves. Flowers are yellow and pink. Plant Zantedeschia aethiopica in full sun or light shade and a moist soil. Propagate via clump division.

Daffodil

Daffodil, or Narcissus, is from the Amaryllidaceae, or Amaryllis, family. It is a perennial plant good for attracting butterflies. They will grow as low as 4 inches or as tall as 2 feet, depending on variety. Flower colors are white, yellow, orange, red or pink. Plant Narcissus in morning sun with afternoon shade, in rich, well-drained soil. Propagate via bulb division or seed.

Black-Eyed Susan

Black-Eyed susan, or Rudbeckia hirta, is from the Asteraceae/Compositae, or aster/daisy, family. It can be an annual or perennial and is good for attracting butterflies. Flowers can get 3 feet tall with colors of yellow, gold, maroon or bronze with dark centers. Plant Rudbeckia hirta in full sun or light shade in soil that doesn't dry out. Propagate via seeds or by root mass division.

Gerber Daisy

Gerber daisy, or Gerbera jamesonii, is from the Asteraceae/Compositae, or aster/daisy, family. It is a perennial flower good for beginning gardeners. It will get 12 to 18 inches tall and have ray petals. There are single and double bloom forms of the plant. Flowers are varied, from white to pink, red to violet. Plant Gerbera jamesonii in full sun or light shade. Propagate via clump division or by seed planting.
