When looking for plants that tolerate humidity, look for ones whose native habitat is tropical or subtropical. They will be used to high humidity and thrive in it. Such plants are naturally strong and hardy and come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Plant more than one variety of the same plant and you can still have a diversified garden.

Coleus

Coleus is a subtropical plant known more for its brightly colored leaves than its flowers. The leaves can be burnished copper, purple, crimson, maroon, pink, yellow, white and many shades of green. Some have variegated leaves and some come in combinations of two or more colors. Growing coleus in partial shade will make the colors of the leaves brighter. The plant can take full sun, but the colors will fade. Coleus needs moist, well-drained soil and morning sun.

Daylilies

Daylilies can take almost any climate, are easy to care for, and come in a wide range of sizes and colors--near-whites, pastels, yellows, oranges, pinks, reds, purple and blue, as well as combinations of these colors. Each flower will last only one day, but each plant produces multiple flowers. Daylily leaves are long, slender and green. The flowers can be circular, triangular, trumpet, flat or spider-shaped, with single or double blooms. Double daylilies have extra segments that look like tufts in the middle of the flower. Daylilies can also have different textures--smooth, creped or ribbed. Daylilies can produce blooms smaller than 3 inches in diameter, blooms of 3 to 4½ inches and those that exceed 4½ inches. Daylilies can adapt to any soil and any lighting situation.

Philodendrons

Philodendron plants thrive in the moist, humid climate of the southern United States. They are grown for their foliage, not their flowers. Most varieties of philodendrons have dark green leaves, but some have undersides that are coppery red or have red veins, and some have leaves that start out red and turn green as they age. Leaves can be heart- or arrow-shaped, long and slim, oval or lobed, and can be anywhere from 3 inches to 3 feet long. Under the best growing conditions philodendrons produce small flowers that resemble a calla lily. Flowers can be purple, pink, red or greenish-white and the flower stalks can be yellow, cream or white. These plants tolerate shade and prefer moist soil.
