Overview

Jasmine Polyanthum, also called winter jasmine or pink jasmine, produces fragrant blooms in the winter months. Gardeners grow Jasmine Polyanthum outoors in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9 and 10. In colder zones, Jasmine Polyanthum grows best as a houseplant. To get Jasmine Polyanthum to flower, indoors or out, provide four to six weeks of growing in temperatures ranging between 40 and 60 degrees F.

Outdoors

Step 1

Select a spot to plant Jasmine Polyanthum receives partial sun, filtered sun or bright shade four hours a day. Pink jasmine does not like full sun during the hot summer months in Zones 9 and 10. Summer heat and sun may cause the leaves to burn and drop on Jasmine Polyanthum, which forces the plant to use its energy for recovery instead of producing flowers.

Step 2

Plant Jasmine Polyanthum in well-draining soil rich with compost. Pink jasmine does best if it is watered regularly but not water-logged.

Step 3

Fertilize Jasmine Polyanthum with a fertilizer high in phosphorous (15-30-15) every two to three weeks during the growing season. This blend of fertilizer encourages winter jasmine to produce flower buds.

Step 4

Protect Jasmine Polyanthum from temperatures that dip below 40 degrees F. Old blankets, sheets or burlap sacks draped and secured over Jasmine Polyanthum plants provide frost protection. For smaller Jasmine Polyanthum plants, place a cardboard box over it. Jasmine Polyanthum that has been exposed to a frost usually dies back, but will recover. It is unlikely, however, to produce flower buds that blooming season.

Indoors

Step 1

Plant Jasmine Polyanthum in well-draining, fertile soil. A general, all-purpose potting soil is sufficient.

Step 2

Place potted Jasmine Polyanthum outdoors during the summer months, or in a bright sunny location in your home. Do not leave potted Jasmine Polyanthum in a spot where it will receive prolonged exposure of intense sunlight during hot summer months, as the sun may damage the leaves of the pink jasmine plant.

Step 3

Fertilize Jasmine Polyanthum with a fertilizer high in phosphorous (15-30-15) every two to three weeks during the growing season. This blend of fertilizer encourages winter jasmine to produce flower buds.

Step 4

Move potted Jasmine Polyanthum to a cool location with temperatures below 60 degrees F four to six weeks before you want it to blossom. The cooler environment signals Jasmine Polyanthum plants to begin forming flower buds. Jasmine Polyanthum still needs filtered sunlight, so cool locations such as a screened-in porch, windowed garage or unheated spare room are ideal as long as the temperature remains above 40 degrees F but below 60 degrees F.
