Overview

The star jasmine plant is an evergreen shrub that has vine branch growth. The plant is native to the tropical areas of China and India and hardy in USDA growing zones 9 through 11. Plant star jasmine as a hedge or in a large landscape area, as it requires room to spread if left to grow naturally. Star jasmine produces 1-inch-wide star-shaped, white flowers that are attractive but not fragrant. The flowers bloom year-round, but are abundant in the summer and fall months.

Step 1

Select a planting location that has well-draining soil and full sun or partial-shade light conditions. Choose a location that offers sunlight from the south or west. Plant star jasmine in a hole that is the same depth as the container it came in and slightly wider.

Step 2

Plant star jasmine in a container filled, if desired, with a soil mixture that is 1 part garden soil, 1 part course sand and 1 part perlite. Choose a container that is large enough to hold the root system with several inches available between the roots and the side of the container.

Step 3

Water the star jasmine with warm water to keep the soil moist during the growing season. Be careful using rainwater as it may be too acidic for the plant. The plant may require more frequent watering during the dry, hot summer months.

Step 4

Apply an acidic type of fertilizer that is water-soluble every two weeks during the plant's active growing period.

Step 5

Propagate star jasmine by taking softwood stem cuttings in the summer months. Semi-hardwood cuttings placed under a misting environment will also propagate well. Dip the cut end of the stem into rooting hormone and stick it into a sterile rooting medium.

Step 6

Monitor the plant for an aphid insect infestation. Spray the plant with water to remove the insects and apply an insecticidal soap every two to three days until the infestation is gone.

Step 7

Prune the star jasmine branches in the spring to prevent overgrowth and keep the plant growing in a shrub shape.
