Q: I planted this Brown Turkey fig four years ago and it has never produced a single fruit. It has grown into a giant shrub, about 10 feet tall and 10′ wide, with beautiful foliage. Can you tell me how I should prune this tree? It has so many “trunks” coming out from the ground!
A: You have to let it grow as it wants to, perhaps even larger than it is. Plants have an inevitable urge to reproduce….so your fig will do whatever it takes to put on fruit (for you) and thereby seeds (for itself).
Eventually it will produce horizontal branches which will give you figs.
If you have to prune it continuously it will never have fruit because pruning shocks it into unproductive juvenile growth.
