Q: I saw a picture online of a wreath made from oat stems and seedheads. Can I grow oats in big pots?
A: It should be no problem. It’s best to plant the seed in September, but there is still time to try the experiment now. Scatter a tablespoon of seed into a 12″ pot and cover shallowly with potting soil. Full sun is great but move the pots to a sheltered spot if the weather heads below 20 degrees. The plants will grow slowly at first but will accelerate in spring. The golden stems and seedheads will typically be ready for harvest in May or June.
