Q: Our garden has been completely rooted up by feral pigs coming up from a nearby river. Is there anything we can do beside build a fence?
A: Before you do anything, call the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to ask their advice.
A fence is the obvious first step but remember that pigs are very strong. They can root under and push up fence wire easily if they badly want to be on the other side.
To give the fence more “ooomph”, consider installing a strand of electric fence ten inches above ground. Regularly spray a herbicide under the wire to prevent it being grounded by grass or weeds.
Another option is to trap the pigs. I found a good design at Corral Traps for Feral Hogs.
More good hints come from Control Techniques for Feral Hogs.
