Q: My brother and sister-in-law found several of these where they walk for exercise near Jesup, GA and wanted to transplant a couple. They thought it was some kind of fern and but they dug it up it had a carrot-like root.
A: Plant expert Bobby Wynn, owner of Wynn’s Intensive Lawn Care in Douglasville, says it’s rosinweed, Silphium compositum. He notes “By late summer it grows a 4 to 5 foot stalk with yellow flowers. I’ve seen it along power/pipe line easements and occasionally along the highways. I know it grows a taproot but, I have no idea if it looks like what you have pictured. Can’t wait to dig one up now!”
