Q: I planned to incorporate this lovely Oak into our new home’s landscape. Last year I noticed splits in the bark and suspected lightning. Now, I suspect a vine, NOT visible at the base…growing UNDERNEATH the tree bark? Do you think the tree will survive?

A: I have good news! The “vine” isn’t a vine…it’s the underbark of the tree trying to grow over the wound. Eventually the two sides will meet and the tree will be protected. No need to do anything.
