Q: I made the mistake a few years ago of underestimating the abundant growth of honeysuckle and star jasmine. I planted small plants of each on both sides of a swing. I have tried to trim and control the growth but it’s been a losing battle. Any suggestions?
In full bloom smells sooooooo good!
A: I have Confederate jasmine (star jasmine) on both sides of an arbor. Every March it gets a haircut with hedge trimmers back close to the metal structure.
I have to trim it again in August to keep the long vines out of a nearby viburnum. When I prune the vine stubs exude a white sticky latex that I’m told is very irritating to your eyes.
But like you, the fragrance in spring more than makes up for the maintenance!
