Daffodils – Protect in Winter

Q: Because of the abnormal warm weather in winter, my daffodils have starting peeking their little heads up. Is there anything I can do to protect them?

A: Many are the anguished cries when gardeners notice that bulb foliage has emerged in early winter. “Get back down in the ground!” they implore. “It’s gonna get really cold soon.”

The truth of the matter is that bulb foliage is rarely harmed by winter temperatures, no matter how low. If there is no swollen flower bud showing, the bulb will survive cold weather just fine.

Even then, I have had daffodil’s bloom beautifully after the buds were covered with snow. If you simply MUST do something, cover the leaves very lightly with pine straw. The bulbs will survive and bloom as expected either way.
