Q: We used to grow a thing called a citron, a watermelon-type fruit. It looks exactly like a watermelon but the darn thing is harder than a rock. Can you tell me where I might acquire some seeds? My younger buddies think I’m crazy when I tell them how hard it was.
A: In the watermelon fields of south Georgia, the citron is a noxious weed, good only for pranks.
I have a friend from Reidsville who relates breaking open citrons and putting them under the tires of cars. The wheels would spin helplessly while the kids laughed their heads off!
Citron flesh is used in fruitcakes and to make preserves. I’ll leave it to you to demonstrate its hardness. One source of seeds is Rare Seeds
