Q: My Japanese Zelkova is dead, and I’m going to cut it out. How can I remove the root?
Can I plant another of the same tree at that same spot?
A: Personally, I find it easier to dig around the roots on the side of the tree AWAY from where I want it to fall and then to sling a rope up into it so I can PULL it down. The height of the tree gives me leverage for my rope to pull; and it is easier and safer to cut the tree into pieces on the ground.
You can then plant another on the same spot, without the added hassle of removing roots.
