Q: I have seen a very short white fuzzy weed in some yards around my neighborhood. It’s very short but it’s not a dandelion. It make the lawn look snowy or cottony. Do you have any idea on what it is?
A: You’re seeing trampweed, Facelis retusa. It is native to South America but has become common in much of the Southeast.
It’s a winter annual weed, meaning it can be controlled by spraying lawns with a broadleaf weed killer (Weed Beater, Weed B Gon, Wipe Out, etc) from November through April.
It is usually seen in poorly maintained lawns, so proper fertilization and mowing will go a long way towards crowding out the weed.
