Q: I have a stone walkway going from my driveway to my pool gate with sand and gravel between the rocks. I’ve heard that thyme makes a good green mat between the rocks and holds the sand and gravel. What do you recommend?
A: I had a similar situation in front of my back yard water feature. The flat stepping stones were laid on clay. I used a vacuum cleaner to suck out loosened clay until I had a six-inch deep slot between the stones. I filled the depression with planting soil and planted creeping thyme, ^Thymus serpyllum^. The thyme thrived and now gracefully covers the stone edges.
