Q: This week we had our gutters cleaned out. On the side of the house where the gutters are twenty feet above ground, the gutter man said he found lots of big, beautiful worms in the accumulated debris. How did the worms get up there?
A: I consulted two groups of friends on this question. After eliminating any answer that contained the word “magic”, there were two schools of thought:
1. A worm crawled up the downspout, passing a very small spider which was on its way down, and deposited eggs in the gutter.
2. A bird eating an earthworm accidentally dropped an earthworm egg sac on your roof. Worms then hatched in your gutter.
Obviously, the question demands further research.
