Q: Will agaves grow in Georgia?
A: Some species of agave (century plant) grow well in Georgia, particularly in the southern half of the state. In metro Atlanta most are done in by poor drainage in winter. If you want to give it a try, Angie Corder at Randy’s Perennials in Lawrenceville says they have an Agave americana that’s now five feet wide growing happily in front of their store. She recommends EXTREMELY well-draining soil. I’m guessing that a 3:1 mix of paver leveling sand and ground pinebark would suit an agave sited in full sunshine.
