Repotting – Drainage Holes

Q: Your website states that placing rocks in the bottom of houseplant pots actually decreases drainage. What do you suggest for repotting into a planter that does not have drainage holes?

A: Houseplants often look their best when the pot is hidden inside a decorative container made of ceramic, wood or metal. Many times these containers were not designed for plants, so they lack a drain hole. In this situation, place a layer of gravel in the bottom of the container and put the potted houseplant on top. Pull the houseplant out of the container every three months to empty any accumulated water.
