Q: Should we skip fertilizing our lawn this year since we are likely to continue our drought conditions?
A: Don’t skip the lawn feeding. I am certain that rain will come this spring. All you have to do is time your applications appropriately. Fescue lawns should be fed now, and again in mid-April. Fertilize all other lawn grasses when soil temperatures are 60 – 65 degrees. A practical way to measure soil heat is to sit on your grass for a while. If you can sit comfortably for ten to fifteen minutes, the soil is warm enough and roots are growing fast enough for you to apply fertilizer. More details at Lawn Care Calendars and Factsheets.
