Q: Can you provide any recommendations as to what fruit trees produce well in this part of Georgia?
A: Even though Georgia is known as “The Peach State”, peaches are not very easy to grow here. Plums are not much better. Apples can be harvested from a homeowner orchard but you’ll have to accept a little damage from insects and disease each year. My favorite fruits to grow include blueberry, fig, blackberry and raspberry. All are relatively pest resistant, are well-adapted to the South and bear delicious fruit regularly.
I’ve also been impressed with the fruit from my serviceberry tree, which is known more as an ornamental tree but which has LOTS of edible fruit in May/June.
