Q: I have a 13 year-old son I’m taking to the deer woods. We planted a no-plow seed mixture in a plot in the woods. The seed instructions say to apply ammonium nitrate when the plants get 3 to 5 inches tall. Where can I find this?
A: Ammonium nitrate has a 33-0-0 analysis. Although farmers have used it to feed their crops for generations, it’s availability is limited because it has been used in terrorist bombings. Instead, look for urea, which has a 34-0-0 analysis and can be used in the same manner as ammonium nitrate. Don’t forget that soil pH is a major limiting factor for wildlife plots.
