Q: I am new at gardening and would like to experiment. I want to grow gooseberry. Online nurseries says it will grow here in zone 7. What is your opinion?
A: Cold hardiness zone 7 includes all of north Georgia, so gooseberry would not be harmed by our cold. What WILL harm it is summer heat. Gooseberry does not tolerate summer temperatures of 85 or more. That’s not a likely scenario in the metro area. You’ll have lots more fun, and success, experimenting with pomegranate, serviceberry, fig and mayhaw.
