Q: Three weeks ago I made a compost tumbler from an black trash can with lots of holes in it. I put green and brown landscape waste in it but it’s not heating up? What am I doing wrong?

A: Your container is too small to have the composted materials “heat up”. Night temperatures were cool for the past week so the composter lost overnight all of the heat it gained during the day from sunshine and natural decomposition. But have no fear, things will still compost. You may have a few more weed seed in the finished compost but nothing to obsess about.
