Q: Is there a web site I can go to that shows daily rainfall records from a recording station near me? I know the University of Georgia has a monitoring station in Watkinsville, but I don’t know if the information collected there is public record or available on the web.
A: The University of Georgia has sixty weather monitoring stations scattered across the state. Sensors measure rainfall, soil temperature, wind speed and solar radiation. All data is completely open to the public at Georgia Weather. Since soil temperature determines when to plant summer bulbs (65 degrees is best) and when to apply crabgrass pre-emergent (50 degrees and rising), I use data from the monitoring station nearest my house very frequently.
