Q: I’ve heard a lot over the years about additives to the water I put in my Christmas tree stand that will help the tree stay fresh longer. Is there any thing like that commercially available?
A: I check my tree every day and add dihydrogen oxide to the water in my stand when it gets low. Most Atlanta area municipalities sell dihydrogen oxide to citizens for a nominal fee.
The cut flower industry has found certain chemical mixtures that increase the fresh life of flowers. However, research has not shown any benefit from using the floral life extenders in Christmas tree water. Aspirin, soft drinks, bleach – – none are as useful as plain old H2O.
