Q: Could you please tell me what I can put in my vegetable garden before I till the soil to keep from having weeds and grasses take over this year? I try to plant a nice vegetable garden each spring, but spend most of my time fighting weeds and grasses instead of tending the vegetables. We plant things like tomatoes, okra, peppers, watermelon, cantaloupes, squash,beans,strawberries & blackberries.

A: Trifluralin (Preen ‘n Green, etc) is labeled for use on vegetables. In most cases you apply it and scratch it into the soil a week before planting. Read and follow the label carefully.
