Question
I have been given a copper beech in a bonsai situation. Apparently it is about 25 years old, and it looks in pain to me.  I would like to liberate it. If I take it out of the pot and plant it in my garden with lots of compost and love, will it begin to grow properly?  My husband says there's no chance of that.  Is there anything I can do to give it another chance at life? (I realise some people like bonsai, but I find it rather disturbing.)  Many thanks.  Julie

I sorry to hear you do not like bonsai. It's not detrimental to the tree if properly cared for. To be honest, most bonsai tree are better cared for than trees grow in nature - they are watered regularly, fertilized, etc... and there's not harsh weather elements to deal with.

I honestly do not think you Beech would survive if placed in the ground. The soil conditions are different. Your tree has been spoiled over the years and it won't do well on it own. Sorry, i'm not sure if this is the answer you were hoping for.

You have a few options. You can sell it, donate it, or continue caring for it.
