flowers in containers

Question
We've just moved and I'm planning on planting flowers in wood planters.  What type of soil do I buy for the planters and do I need to put some rocks in the bottom of them?

How often should I fertilize them?

Also, do you have suggestions for what types of flowers to plant in planters that will be in full sun, the shade and in partial shade?  Ones that are hardy and easy to care for would be my preference as I'm new at doing this and any tips you can give will be appreciated!  I live in zone 7b.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Lynne, make sure you use a quality Potting Mix,,,not Topsoil!..(I prefer moisture control Miracle-Grow), put several inches of gravel or pebbles along the bottom for drainage and fill to within 2 inches of the rim with your soil; the selection of plants is endless,,,any of the Annuals are preferable, ie: Marigolds, Petunias etc. but just be careful not to overcrowd (big mistake many people make),,because they don't envision what the plant will look like full grown. Fertilize once a Month with  Miracle-Grow for flowering plants, while keeping the mixture from completely drying out (check every day to ensure it is still somewhat damp). Lastly, full Sun location for optimum blooms, partial Sun for less blooms. If you are placing a planter in a shadier area, then stick to plants like Coleus and other colorful, leafy plants, yet Impatiens are the rare flowering plant that will do fine there.
