QuestionI have two whiskey barrels that get full sun, especially the hot, central Alabama sun. I am having difficulty finding the best plants for this location. I found lantana and sweet potatoe vines too aggressive as the barrels are located on either side of a walkway and can be seen from the street. I like the idea a something tall and also something that cascades. Your expert opinion is appreciated.
AnswerHi Lynn, I would research "Crown of thorns", there is a variety that has larger flowers then the standard version sold in most Home Depots and Lowes and would give you that upright and exansive look with little care needed. Crown of Thorns thrive in direct, hot, Sun, with very little water needed for optimum display. I don't know that exact species, but if you look into Crown of Thorns, you will see the one I am talking about. I have 6 growing in containers here in South Florida and they are constantly stopping traffic with their majestic size and color, and have been quite happy in the same containers for several years, with no need to repot or change out the soil. The only thing I need to control is their receiving too much water, other then that, they are pretty impervious to any other problems. One other choice would be Desert Rose, it is similiar in growth habit to the Crown, with tolerance of plenty of heat and Sun, and little water..Nick
