AnswerHi David, I wouldn't use anything that would preserve it, like paint, or stain, for it always has the danger of leaching into the soil and permeating your plants inner tissue; my suggestion is to use 4x4 or 6x6 landscape timber (untreated), it will last years and is relatively cheap. Nick
