growing avacado trees

Question
I have an avocado tree that I started bout a year or 2 ago from a seed center and the trunk is very thin and 4'to 5'tall, how do I prune it so the trunk of the tree will grow bigger

Answer
Timing plays an important role in pruning avocado trees. Light trimming can be done any time of year. This would be nipping buds, and trimming leaves off, not limbs. Heavy pruning should only be done in late winter or early spring, when new growth starts.

Look at your tree carefully. What you want to accomplish when pruning is to cut in areas that will encourage growth from that cut, while keeping the shape of the tree balanced. All suckers, water sprouts, and vertical growth should be removed. The long thin limbs are then cut back a third, just above a leaf joint. This will thicken the side branches. If the tree is top heavy, thin the top. Leave the leader stem intact. Don't cut the tree top off. This would split the leader stem and weaken the tree. The leader stem will thicken, and strengthen as the tree matures. Until then, it is important to give it support with a strong stake.
