QuestionHi, I have carnations growing in a planter. This is there second year and I still have no flowers, any idea why?
AnswerIt sounds like the terrible "too's".
Too dry
Too wet
Too much sun
Too little sun
Too deep in the soil
Too shallow in the soil
Too little fertilizer
Too much fertilizer
Too big of a container
Too small of a container
You get the picture. Plants have a comfort zone, and if you have not found that zone, they don't do as well as they can. I can't detect the problem from here. But if you look at the list above and determine if any of these conditions are present, then it is a place to start changing what is wrong and soon you will see the results.
Carnations don't like to be wet, or shaded. They like good soil with good drainage. Make sure the container is the right size. Also check for insects and diseases. Look at the color of the leaves. This will give an indication of whether the plant is healthy. Is it thick and robust, or spindly. And finally pull it out of the pot and check the roots. They should be healthy and strong. Change the location where you have it. It would be my first guess that it is not getting enough sunlight.
