vines

Question
I never have grown vines before,I live in a upstair apt and have a small patio,I get sun from east to west.I live in northern calif(bayarea),whats a good vine to grow?Thank you

Answer
I could answer with so many names, but to answer with a good vine for YOU would be presumptuous.
A lovely flowering vine is the Clematis, but it is fussy and needs care.
Ivy is a vine and can be left out on the patio all winter and summer, to grow where it wishes without fuss. It doesn't like to be hot. It prefers the shade. Will cover the patio if you let it.
The Hoya vine was popular in the 70's. It grows quickly, and never stops growing. It will not take temperatures in the 30's. It is easy to grow.
Jasmine grows well in containers. It has fragrant flowers. It needs a lot of water. It likes to be protected from harsh weather.

I suggest that you go to the nursery and look at the plants. Read the labels, and ask questions, when you find one you like. It is a matter of taste. What you like, and what you think will look the best. Then find out how to care for it and how big it will get. There are a lot of vines that are thugs. They get way to big and cumbersome to grow in pots on a patio. If you plan to leave it on the patio all year, then it will be important to know if it will be able to handle the weather easily. How much time do you want to spend trimming and caring for it? What do you want it to eventually do?
Many vines will keep growing until they are pruned. Do you want it to climb up, or hang down? It will be necessary to repot it occasionally as it grows to large for the container. It will need frequent watering, and maintenance to look its best.
