QuestionHi,
I have a Jasmine vine I bought a few months ago that was blooming and vined around a round piece of wood stuck in the container. It is no longer blooming, but it grew new vines that went all over, then the old part of the vines started dying. I repotted it a month or so ago as it was severly pot bound. Now, however the newer vines are dying too. they seem to dry up at the newer end, and break off. I'm losing this plant. Help.
AnswerIt sounds like you may have waited too long to repot it. What happens is, the tight roots are not able to get enough water or nutrients to support the plant. So, here's what we need to do.
Take the plant out of the container. examine the roots. If they are still in a tight mass, gently loosen them, so that they will go out into the fresh soil. Put it back into the container, and gently press the soil around the plant. Add soil if you need to, making sure that there is plenty to cover the roots. Then water heavily to get all of the air pockets out. (Let the soil dry out down about a half inch, before you add water again.)
Next, you will need to make sure that your stressed plant has only healthy, growth to support. So you will need to prune all of the dead and damaged parts of the plant off.
The more you cut off, the less the roots will need to deal with. You are starting the plant over again.
If the plant is too damaged, this may not work.
If the problem is a disease, this won't work.
If the problem is the environment, it may need to be moved to a better location. Jasmine vines like protection from sun, wind, heat, and cold.
An Eastern wall, with other plants nearby, is the best location.
Never fertilize a plant that is stressed.
Just keep it comfortable, and let it heal itself.
Jasmine don't like to be too wet or too dry. too hot, or too cold.
Hopefully you will be able to correct the problem, and keep a close eye on it in the future.
Without seeing the plant, I can not tell exactly what is wrong. I have used this method many times to bring plants back from near death.
