QuestionI'm trying to set up a container garden on my small balcony. Different parts of the balcony get from no sun to 3 hours of sun. Any recommendations on plants that would grow well without bringing them indoors for the winter? I'd particularly love to find something evergreen that would block out the view of my neighbors balcony, either with a hedge-like bush or something that I can grow up a trellis.
AnswerI have had good success with Camellias. I have a C. sasanqua that is growing in full shade on a bamboo trellis. It blooms in the winter, around Christmas, with beautiful white flowers, and then has rich dark green leaves all year. There are many other varieties that do the same. The only real concern, with this choice, is whether, or not it is hardy where you are.
The choices are limited, because of the requirements and conditions. If the Camellia can stand the hot, and cold of New York City, then it is the one to try.
You should talk to your local nursery professional, about what will grow best in your climate. If they have the plant available for you, then there is a good chance he has done the research, and knows it will grow there.
