Questionhi,
My husband and i bought alberta spruce spiral twist plants in deco pots. We are wondering if we can keep them in their containers over the winter season or will they die. We just bought them this spring. And we are also wondering how often should we water them in their containers over the spring and summer season. thanks, Maria
AnswerYou will find that evergreen trees can go for longer periods of time without watering, then other container plants, and they won't tell you when they need water, until it is too late. So, to avoid over, or underwatering, CHECK THE SOIL. This is the most important advise I can give you. Do not water on a time table. You can check the soil on a time table, if it is easier for you to remember. But, I think you will find that most of the times that you check it, it will not require water.
You will need to keep it pruned, to keep the sculptured shape. These trees will sometimes get brown needles, and look like there is a problem. The brown needles are usually just old ones being shed every year. But, if you see the brown needles, it doesn't hurt to check the trees closely to see if there are any problems. Again check the soil, and look for any insects, or diseases.
In the winter, they will be fine outside. For good protection, place them next to a building, or some other wind break. If the weather enters a period of freezing, and thawing, put some insulation around to container to keep the extreme changes at a minimum. Don't let heavy snow sit on the branches, and break them.
If the plants become root bound in their containers, and the water doesn't drain easily, pot them up to the next size container.
