QuestionI just bought a Dwarf Patio Peach tree. It was an Impulse buy. My yard in small so I would like to keep it in a pot. What size container should I get? What about winter? I live in zone 7. What else do I need to do to keep it alive, I don't want to be a tree murderer because I thought it irrationally it would be cool to grow my own fruit.
AnswerDwarf peach trees adapt well to planters at least 2 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Fill the planter with very good potting soil, up to near the top. Make a well in the soil, and place the tree in so that the top of the root ball is at the same depth it was in it's pot. Fill in the soil around it, and gently press out any air pockets around the edges. Water it in very well, so that the soil settles around it. Add more soil if needed.
Next spring, when the new growth begins, give it liquid fertilizer at half strength.
For the winter, if you can move the container, move it into your garage or basement, by a well lighted window. The container will be easier to move if you place it on a wheeled platform. They can take tempertures above 30 degrees. If you can't move it, try surrounding it with large bags of leaves, to keep the roots from freezing, a sheet over the plant will help keep the frost off. Remove it during the day, so that it can get air and light.
Pruning, repotting, spraying for bugs and diseases, and watering, will be part of your routine.
The fruit that these trees produce is not of the same quality as the larger parent trees, but you will have the satisfaction that you went to the trouble to grow it. That makes the fruit much sweeter and more valuble.
