QuestionI recently read your 12/1/2005 response to the question from the individual with a potted avacado in the 12 inch pot that had a skinny stem hope to use the answer to help save the potted avacado tree a friend just gave us. She grew it from the pit and once we moved into our new home brought it over - however it is over 5 feet tall with only a skinny stem that falls over and very very few trees. I believe the pot is too large and will try your suggestion for repotting to help the stem thicken - however any suggestions for dealing with the height? Without any other stems or leaves yet (a few are starting to grow) how would we prune it back?
AnswerI read your question carefully. I don't think it will be easy for you to prune the tree, without any leaves or stems. All you would be left with is a long, skinnny stem.
This is a tree that should be planted in the ground, not in a container. So, be aware that there will be a time when you will have to take your 10 foot tree out side.
Give it plenty of sun when you can. If it is not getting enough light, it will stretch, and become weak, and fall over. Repotting won't help, if the light is why it is so skinny.
