salvia question

Question
I planted several red salvias two months ago in planters on my porch.  They are doing very well, as I figured they would.  From all I have read they sounded like an easy plant to keep and grow.  My question is, do salvias need to be pinched back to encourage denser growth?  Most other flowering plants need this, but I was unsure about salvia.  Also, any other special needs?  Thanking you in advance

Answer
There are many Salvias, It would be helpful to know what variety you have. Nearly 60 species and an additional 40 to 50 selections are grown in the West. It is part of the Sage family. There are annuals, perennials, and shrubs. Their hardiness varies by species. Most enjoy full sun. Most like to be somewhat dry. They originate in Mexico, South America, and Africa. Which tells the climate they are used to.
I would be very careful about pruning. Just dead heading is all it needs. If it is not blooming well, or is not
producing buds, then move it to an area with more light and take off only the spindley growth that is not producing. Cut it lightly down to just above a leaf. The new growth will be just below that cut. Salvias by nature, tend to be tall and thin. If the plant is doing well, as you say, pruning is not what it needs.
If it is crowded in the container, it will not grow as large. Pull it out of the container if you can, to see if it is root bound. With salvia, I have noticed that they get as big as their roots are able to grow. Too much care, is often worse then not enough. By that I mean, don't over do anything, like water, fertilizer, etc. Just make it comfortable, and leave it alone.
I guess what I am trying to say is " if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
