QuestionHi, thanks for your help. We purchased a dwarf peach tree last year and this year it's full of beauitful little peaches, what I need to know is
how do I care for this tree? Do I need to spray it to keep the fruit safe? If so, what spray should I use and how often? Thanks so much!
AnswerI can give you information about care of Peach trees, but without knowing your climate zone, and the variety of tree, variety of insects, and diseases, and how it is being grown, my answer would not be as helpful as the your local extention agent. They have a calender that is very helpful in telling exactly when to prune, thin, feed, and spray for your area. They can also tell you what to spray with.
Fruit trees require a great deal of attention, to produce well year after year. Don't ever take it for granted, and ignore it. Always inspect the tree for problems. Give it plenty of water, and feed it with 10-10-10 fertilizer in March and August. Watch for birds eating the fruit. If they are a problem, plant other aromatic berries in the area, such a chokecherries, mulberries, or dogwood. Birds seem to prefer them.
If you are in a cold climate, be careful of late freezes. The buds are easily damaged by frost.
Look for information in websites on your computer through a search. Go to the library or book store and find books that will give you information. Ask your local nursery.
But my best advice is the county extention agent, I mentioned before. They are the ones, the commercial growers go to for information about every thing from the weather, to what new methods are being used to control problems. Because they are constantly experimenting to find a better way. So they would have the newest, and best information.
Enjoy your peaches, and take good care of your tree.
