QuestionIs it possible to grow sunflowers in containers?
Thanks-Susan
AnswerTall sunflower cultivars can grow 6 1/2 to 10 feet high. These giants aren't suitable for containers. There are, however, dwarf breeds that stay considerably smaller, such as the cultivar "Teddy Bear". Also called 'Dwarf Sungold". It reaches a height of only 16 inches, and produces beautiful golden-yellow double flowers. "Gelber Knirps" grows to 24 inches and "Helios" is 28 inches high.
They are all annuals.
They bloom from July to October in most areas.
They need warm, full sun.
Plant seed in small starter pot, then pot up when they are large enough.
Water abundantly, but avoid standing water. Feed often until August. They are heavy feeders. If the temperature is over 90, hold fertilizer until the high temperature is below 90.
